Roberts says 'I had almost given up on football'
Osian Roberts has revealed how friendship with Thierry Henry helped him back into football. The Wales coach had been out of football for nine months before he was approached by Henry, who asked him to take charge of Serie B side Como 1907.
Roberts and Henry have both worked at UEFA together, and Roberts admitted he was "lost" and had "almost given up on football" when Henry called him.
But since joining Como, Roberts has helped the club secure promotion to Serie A, with the club finishing second in Serie B and finishing the season six points clear of third place.
Former Arsenal and Barcelona forward Henry was appointed manager of COMO in May 2020, and brought Roberts in as his assistant.
Roberts spent six years as Wales' assistant manager, during which time they reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, where they lost to eventual winners Portugal,
"I'm very grateful to Thierry for giving me this opportunity," said Roberts.
"I had almost given up on football, but he called me and asked me to come and help him at Como.
"I'm so glad I did, because it's been an incredible experience. We've won promotion to Serie A, and I've learned so much from Thierry and the rest of the staff.
"I'm really excited for the future. I think we can achieve great things at Como."
